Body Composition Policy (AR 600-9): Under Army Directive 2026-13, Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR < 0.550) is the sole authorized Army body-composition standard. High fitness scores (such as the legacy 540 ACFT or 465 AFT rules) no longer exempt soldiers from meeting height/weight and WHtR body-composition limits.

How the Army Fitness Test Scoring Works

The Army Fitness Test (AFT) is the official physical fitness assessment of record for the United States Army, having formally superseded the six-event Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) on June 1, 2025. Governed by ATP 7-22.01 (Holistic Health and Fitness Testing) and published Department of the Army scoring tables, the assessment quantifies muscular strength, muscular endurance, anaerobic power, and aerobic capacity across five core events scored from 0 to 100 points each, producing a maximum composite score of 500 points.

The transition from the legacy ACFT to the AFT introduced three major structural refinements:

  • Removal of the Standing Power Throw (SPT): Empirical biomechanical audits revealed that backward overhead medicine ball throws exhibited high measurement variance and elevated lumbar strain without offering unique prognostic utility over the multi-joint 3-Rep Max Deadlift and Sprint-Drag-Carry.
  • Bifurcation of Standards (Combat vs. General): Combat Arms Military Occupational Specialties (MOSs) and Areas of Concentration (AOCs) are evaluated under a single, sex-neutral performance standard, whereas combat-enabling and support specialties are normed by biological sex and 10 distinct age brackets.
  • Strict Elimination of Event Averages: Passing the test of record requires scoring at least 60 points in every single event independently. Achieving 100 points on four events (400 points) but earning 59 points on the run results in a test failure on DA Form 705-TEST.

Step-by-Step Worked Scoring Examples

To understand how raw event measurements translate into official scaled scores, passing determinations, and promotion points, examine two representative service members taking record tests.

Worked Example 1: Specialist (E-4) 11B Infantryman • Combat Standard

Male Soldier, Age 24, Specialty: 11B (Infantry). Required: Sex-Neutral Combat Standard • Min 60 pts/event • Min 350 pts total.

Event Raw Performance Lookup Standard Points Awarded Event Result
3-Rep Max Deadlift (MDL) 310 lbs Combat / Male 22–26 92 pts Pass (≥60)
Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP) 46 reps Combat / Male 22–26 85 pts Pass (≥60)
Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC) 1:42 (102 sec) Combat / Male 22–26 90 pts Pass (≥60)
Forearm Plank (PLK) 2:45 (165 sec) Combat / Male 22–26 84 pts Pass (≥60)
Two-Mile Run (2MR) 15:18 (918 sec) Combat / Male 22–26 86 pts Pass (≥60)
Composite Total 437 / 500 pts PASSED

Analysis: All 5 events comfortably exceed the 60-point minimum threshold. The composite total of 437 exceeds the 350-point Combat MOS standard by +87 points. Under AR 600-8-19 Table 3-4, a score of 437 awards 81 promotion points toward Sergeant (E-5).

Worked Example 2: Sergeant (E-5) 92Y Supply Specialist • General Standard

Female Soldier, Age 28, Specialty: 92Y (Support MOS). Required: Age- & Sex-Normed General Standard • Min 60 pts/event • Min 300 pts total.

Event Raw Performance Lookup Standard Points Awarded Event Result
3-Rep Max Deadlift (MDL) 180 lbs Female 27–31 80 pts Pass (≥60)
Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP) 32 reps Female 27–31 83 pts Pass (≥60)
Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC) 2:28 (148 sec) Female 27–31 88 pts Pass (≥60)
Forearm Plank (PLK) 2:10 (130 sec) Female 27–31 75 pts Pass (≥60)
Two-Mile Run (2MR) 18:40 (1120 sec) Female 27–31 81 pts Pass (≥60)
Composite Total 407 / 500 pts PASSED

Analysis: Every event achieves at least 75 points. The composite score of 407 easily clears the 300-point General standard. Under AR 600-8-19 Table 3-4, 407 total points converts to 63 promotion points toward Staff Sergeant (E-6).

The 5 Events & Official Movement Standards

Each event in the AFT tests a discrete component of physical fitness required for operational readiness and battlefield resilience:

1. 3-Repetition Maximum Deadlift (MDL)

The MDL evaluates lower-body, posterior chain, and grip maximal strength. Testing is executed using a standard 60-lb hex bar (trap bar) loaded with bumper plates. The Soldier steps inside the hexagonal cage, takes a neutral grip, and performs three continuous, controlled repetitions without dropping the bar, using straps, or resting on the floor. Hips and knees must achieve complete terminal extension at the apex of each repetition.

2. Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP — Arm Extension)

The HRP measures upper-body pushing endurance and core stability over a two-minute interval. Starting in the front leaning rest position, the Soldier lowers their entire body until the chest touches the mat. Both arms are immediately extended laterally to form a 90-degree angle with the torso (hands lifted completely off the deck) before returning hands to shoulder width and pressing upward until elbows lock out. The body must maintain a rigid, unbent alignment from head to heels throughout.

3. Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC)

The SDC assesses high-intensity anaerobic capacity, agility, and load-carriage power across five continuous 50-meter shuttles on a 25-meter lane (total 250 meters):

  1. 50m Sprint: Sprint 25m down, touch line with foot and hand, sprint 25m back.
  2. 50m Sled Drag: Grasp strap handles and pull a 90-lb weighted sled backward 25m across line, turn around, and pull 25m back across baseline.
  3. 50m Lateral Shuffle: Perform lateral shuffle 25m facing one direction (feet never crossing), touch line, and shuffle 25m back facing the same direction.
  4. 50m Kettlebell Carry: Lift two 40-lb kettlebells (one per hand) and run 25m down, step over line, and run 25m back without throwing weights.
  5. 50m Sprint: Final maximal sprint 25m down, touch line, and sprint 25m through the finish line.

4. Forearm Plank (PLK)

The Plank evaluates isometric core stabilization and anterior muscular endurance. The Soldier rests on forearms and toes with elbows aligned directly under the shoulders. The body must maintain a straight line from the ankles through knees, hips, and shoulders. The clock runs until the Soldier drops their knees, sags their hips, raises their buttocks excessively, or lifts a foot or forearm from the ground.

5. Two-Mile Run (2MR)

The 2MR measures long-duration aerobic endurance. Conducted outdoors on a measured, paved, or flat running track, Soldiers complete two miles as rapidly as possible without pacing assistance from unauthorized personnel.

Combat Standard vs. General Standard Explained

Unlike previous legacy PT tests that applied identical scoring mechanisms across all jobs, the modern Army bifurcates requirements based on battlefield demands:

Dimension Combat Standard General Standard
Applicable Specialties Designated Combat MOSs (11A/B/C/Z, 12A/B, 13A/F, 180A, 18-series SF, 19A/C/D/K/Z) All non-combat MOSs (Logistics, Cyber, Medical, Aviation, Personnel, Signal)
Sex Norming Sex-Neutral: All soldiers scored against identical male baseline charts Normed by Sex: Separate scoring tables for biological males and females
Age Norming Yes (10 age brackets) Yes (10 age brackets)
Individual Event Cutoff 60 points per event 60 points per event
Total Score Cutoff 350 points out of 500 (averaging 70 pts/event) 300 points out of 500 (averaging 60 pts/event)
Authorized Alternate Events No alternate events allowed for record combat tests Authorized for permanent profiles (Pass/Fail • 60 pts)

The sex-neutral combat threshold reflects the reality that battlefield casualty evacuation, heavy weapons carriage, and breaching obstacles demand absolute, non-negotiable physical outputs regardless of gender. Soldiers in combat specialties must achieve an average of at least 70 points across all five events to reach the mandatory 350-point threshold.

Alternate Aerobic Events for Profiled Soldiers

Under Army regulation ATP 7-22.01, Soldiers with an approved, permanent medical profile documented on DA Form 3349 prohibiting running may be authorized to complete an alternate aerobic assessment in place of the Two-Mile Run:

  • 5,000-Meter Row: Completed on a stationary Concept2 (or Army-approved equivalent) rowing machine with damper setting set between 1 and 5.
  • 12,000-Meter Stationary Bike: Completed on an authorized upright stationary ergometer with calibrated resistance.
  • 1,000-Meter Swim: Completed continuously in a 25-meter or 50-meter indoor or outdoor swimming pool using any stroke without artificial buoyancy aids.
  • 2.5-Mile Walk: Executed on a flat, level outdoor surface without running or jogging steps.

The GO / NO-GO 60-Point Rule

Unlike standard AFT events which award progressive point scales up to 100 points, alternate aerobic events are strictly evaluated on a GO / NO-GO basis:

  • If the Soldier completes the alternate event within the maximum allowable time limit for their age and sex, they receive exactly 60 points toward their total score.
  • Completing the event faster than the cutoff does not award additional points; the maximum possible score for any alternate event is capped at 60 points.
  • Because the aerobic score is capped at 60 points, the theoretical maximum composite score for a profiled Soldier completing an alternate event is 460 out of 500 points (100 on MDL, HRP, SDC, and PLK + 60 on the alternate event).
  • If the Soldier exceeds the cutoff time by even one second, the event is marked NO-GO (0 points), resulting in an immediate record test failure.

Army Promotion Points Conversion (AR 600-8-19)

For junior enlisted Soldiers competing for semi-centralized promotion to Sergeant (E-5) and Staff Sergeant (E-6), AFT scores translate directly into military training promotion points on DA Form 3355 under AR 600-8-19 Table 3-4 (March 2026 edition):

Composite AFT Score Range Promotion Points Awarded Composite AFT Score Range Promotion Points Awarded
500 (Maximum) 120 pts 395–399 57 pts

405–409 63 pts 300–304 1 pt
400–404 60 pts < 300 (Fail) 0 pts

Each additional 5-point increment on the AFT yields exactly 3 additional promotion points on DA Form 3355. Earning a maximum score of 500 awards the full 120 points available for physical fitness.

Army Body Fat Exemption & AR 600-9 Policy Evolution

The relationship between physical fitness test performance and Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) circumference tape testing has undergone significant regulatory evolution over recent testing cycles:

1. Historical 540 Exemption (Army Directive 2023-08)

Under the former 6-event ACFT (600-point maximum), Army Directive 2023-08 established that Soldiers scoring 540 points or higher (with at least 80 points in every individual event) were completely exempt from the body fat circumference tape test, even if their body weight exceeded the screening weight on table screening charts. This policy recognized that lean, heavily muscled lifters frequently failed traditional tape calculations despite low actual adiposity.

2. Intermediate 465 Threshold (Army Directive 2025-17)

When the Army restructured the assessment to the 5-event AFT (500-point maximum), Army Directive 2025-17 adjusted the exemption threshold proportionally to 465 points or more, requiring at least 80 points in each of the 5 primary events.

3. Current Regulatory Status (Army Directive 2026-13 • WHtR Standard)

Under Army Directive 2026-13, the Department of the Army modernized AR 600-9 by replacing tape equations with the single Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR < 0.550) standard. Under this policy, fitness scores and body composition compliance were decoupled: all Soldiers must meet the WHtR standard regardless of their AFT score, ensuring metabolic and cardiovascular health tracking across the entire force.

2025–2026 Policy Timeline & The Combat Field Test (CFT)

The U.S. Army's physical readiness doctrine continues to evolve as training directives incorporate real-world operational feedback:

  • June 1, 2025: The AFT formally replaces the ACFT as the test of record across Active Duty, Army National Guard, and U.S. Army Reserve components under Army Directive 2025-06. The Standing Power Throw is officially eliminated from record testing.
  • October 2025: DA Form 705-TEST updated across digital training management platforms (DTMS), cementing 5-event scoring cards and the 350-point Combat MOS cutoff.
  • March 2026: AR 600-8-19 Table 3-4 published, establishing the modernized 120-point promotion point scale for semi-centralized promotions.
  • April 2026 Rollout: The Department of the Army announced phased unit testing of the Combat Field Test (CFT), an advanced tactical evaluation intended to augment annual baseline testing for close-combat forces operating in austere field environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary difference between the ACFT and the AFT?

The legacy ACFT comprised six events with a maximum score of 600 points. The current AFT consists of five events with a maximum score of 500 points. The Standing Power Throw was removed due to high measurement error and equipment limitations. Additionally, the AFT establishes two distinct standards: a single sex-neutral Combat Standard (350 points minimum) for designated combat MOSs, and an age- and sex-normed General Standard (300 points minimum) for support specialties.

What happens if I score 100 points on 4 events but only 59 points on the run?

You fail the record test. Under Army Fitness Test doctrine, every event must achieve at least 60 points independently. Even though your composite score would be 459 points (well above the passing totals of 300 or 350), failing a single event results in a test failure on DA Form 705-TEST.

Can female Soldiers pass the Combat Standard?

Yes. The Combat Standard is sex-neutral, meaning male and female Soldiers in designated combat MOSs (such as 11B Infantry or 12B Combat Engineer) are graded on the exact same scale. While physically demanding, female Soldiers routinely pass the 150-lb minimum deadlift, 14 push-ups, 2:31 sprint-drag-carry, 1:25 plank, and 19:45 two-mile run required to achieve 60 points per event and a 350 composite score.

How are alternate aerobic events scored on the AFT?

Alternate aerobic events (5,000m row, 12,000m bike, 1,000m swim, and 2.5-mile walk) are evaluated on a strict Pass/Fail (GO / NO-GO) basis. Completing the event within the maximum allowable cutoff time awards exactly 60 points toward the composite score. No additional points are awarded for faster times, capping the maximum score on an alternate event at 60.

Does a high AFT score exempt me from Army body fat tape testing?

No. Under the current Army Body Composition Program policy (Army Directive 2026-13), Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR < 0.550) is the sole authorized metric. Former score-based exemptions—such as the legacy 540-point ACFT exemption under Directive 2023-08 or the 465-point AFT rule under Directive 2025-17—have been officially discontinued. Fitness testing and body composition compliance are evaluated independently.

How do AFT scores convert into promotion points?

Under AR 600-8-19 Table 3-4, AFT scores between 300 and 500 points convert directly into promotion points on DA Form 3355 for promotion to SGT (E-5) and SSG (E-6). Scoring 300 points awards 1 promotion point, scaling up by 3 points for every 5-point test increase, up to the maximum 120 promotion points awarded for a perfect 500 score.
